Town History

Located in the “Shoals Area,” Leighton is one of the many historic towns located in Northwest Alabama.

Leighton was one of the first settlements in Colbert County, from way back in 1810.  A that point it was called “Jeffery’s Crossroads,” in 1824 William Leigh, founder of the present town and postmaster dubbed the town Leighton.

In it’s hey day Leighton was one of the cotton capitals of the South.  Old timers here recall how on cotton sale day the streets were packed with people, “it looked like Mardi Gras,” was a comment we heard over and over.

When cotton fell, so did Leighton.  A few fires also ravaged the city. The town still survived for the most part, but unfortunately the days of mini Mardi Gras are over.
